One of the most common mistakes people make is to avoid decluttering their home before shifting to a new house. Not only does it cost you extra money to ship, it also saddles you with hordes of useless items. Therefore, moving to a new house is the best time to declutter your home and adopt a lean philosophy of living.

The following tips will help you a great deal to put out the decluttering stress:

1. Ditch duplicate items: The thumb rule here is: take only that you actually use. So, if you find four identical cake tins while cleaning up your home, it is time to be ruthless and get rid of extras.

2. Anything unused in a year: Applying the same rule as above, if you cannot recall using any product in the last one year or more, it is not eligible to move homes with you.

3. Anything unworn in a year: The year-old rule applies to clothes as well. Whether old or new, if you haven’t worn any item in the past one year, chances are that you never will. Donate them to charity.

4. Dysfunctional furniture: This is the perfect time to sell that useless piece of furniture occupying a big chunk of space in your home

5. Expired food items: Be wise and check all edible items in packets, bottles and cans for expiry dates. If anything is beyond its best before date, it makes sense to dump it right away, instead of moving them and doing later.

6. Outdated bathroom items: A similar strategy needs to be adopted for out of date bathroom items. If anything is past its date of expiry or not used regularly, dump it straight away.

7. Expendable paperwork: Any paperwork that has outlived its usage can be thrown away to cut out the stress of moving it. Anyone apprehensive can also scan those documents and keep a digital copy, if needed.

8. Outdated newspapers and magazines: Newspapers and magazines are among the biggest guzzlers of physical space at home. Weed out anything you have read or if a particular article is so dear, take a picture on your phone. Then dump it.

9. Redundant CDs, videotapes and DVDs: Fit in all the contents of CDs, DVDs and tapes in a hard drive and root out the redundant pieces of technology

10. Burnt out kitchenware: Dump any useless appliances or kitchenware that has outlived its usage.
